Not really savage, more uncomfortable really. Ohio widower Ben Pride (Barry Sullivan) moves to Kansas with his parents and children shortly after the Civil War. When they arrive in Lawrence they are harassed by Confederate marauders led by Jud Barker (George C. Scott).
